Wisp

Wisps are creatures that summon portals to the outer islands of the Overworld.

Spawning

Wisps spawn between 8 and 16 blocks away from Rifts, usually with direct line of sight to the Rift. Wisps do not spawn on outer islands.

Every (real-life) day, 25 Wisps each select a random Rift to spawn at. Each Wisp remains near the same Rift for the entirety of the day. Wisps select Rifts with unique material and creature names: for example, there is always exactly one Wisp near a Rift named Cow, one near a Rift named Emerald, and so on. They move to new Rifts when the server restarts at 12PM UTC daily.

Each Wisp opens a portal to a Rift on an outer island. A Wisp always spawns near a Rift with a matching creature name to the island Rift it is associated with. For example, a Wisp that spawns near Copper Pig will summon a portal to an island Rift named ____ Pig.

Behavior

When idle, Wisps move around a small area a few blocks off the ground. Wisps emit particles that match the biome they will open a portal to, but they are not otherwise visible. They emit Rift-like noises every few seconds.

When a player interacts with a Wisp, the Wisp will begin to move away from the Rift it spawned at. While moving, the Wisp will continue to emit particles and noises. After moving 20 to 30 blocks, the Wisp will stop moving until a player interacts with it again.

After a player has interacted with a Wisp and caused it to move four times, the Wisp will open a portal that leads to the outer island Rift it is associated with. Players may interact with this portal to warp to the outer island.

Wisp Portal

If no players are within 64 blocks of a Wisp, the Wisp will despawn. It will spawn again near the same Rift the next time a player moves within 64 blocks of the Rift. Therefore, if you lose track of a Wisp, warp away and warp back to the Rift to reset it.
